To: repent@repentamerica.comSent: Fri, 17 Dec 2004 11:59:17 -0500Subject: A Letter of SupportTo Whom It May Concern:Due to the political nature of my work, please pardon me if I do not supply you with my (full) name or occupation, however, I felt it necessary to email you with a letter of support.
I am a 27 year old gay man from Philadelphia and I have been intently following the news articles regarding your eleven members who were arrested at our annual OutFest celebration in October. What has happened here is an absolute disgrace and I feel that the other members of my so-called "community" have done a grave injustice to not only you and your organization, but to gay people such as myself who feel that regardless of anyone's message, everyone has a right to express their opinion in the public square. I personally do not share the views commonly held within the gay community and personally feel offended that I have been marred by this incident when I fully support your right to show opposition. I find it ludicrous that the members of the gay community, who consistently maintain that they are persecuted and treated unfairly, have gone to great lengths to do to your members the same injustices that have supposedly been done onto them in the past.
Regardless of my religious views, although I am a religious man, I feel that this persecution of the Christian element of our society has gone on far too long. I personally don't care if you feel my being gay is wrong, nor do I care if you attempt to "save me" as the decision to save myself is completely up to me. Regardless of our differences of opinion, I feel that you have the right and deserve respect for your beliefs so long as you respect my own rights and my own beliefs. I do not wish to get on a soapbox here, but I feel that I must make it clear that although we differ
in our opinions, not all gay people share the views of the gay majority. No matter how you cut this, in my mind you have been the victim of the hypocrisy known as hate crime and that your rights, beyond any doubt, have been violated in the most basic and fundamental way.
I wish you and your members well and all the luck in the world to ensure that they not have to spend the rest of their natural lives in jail for doing nothing more than reading the words of God. Please believe me when I say that not all gay men and women share the views so often expressed by radical gays on the nightly news. Some of us, although rare, really do understand the concepts of religious freedoms and personal respect and will undoubtedly support your rights to oppose our
lifestyle regardless of your reasoning. I wish your eleven members all the best in their endeavor and hope that in the end, they will be able to walk the streets to continue their protests in the future.
Sincerely yours,J Smith.
